What Is A Computer IP Address?

Optiquest ServicesAny machine that is connected to a network has its own ID code called an IP address. Think of an IP address as a cyber-mailing address.  This address allows other machines on the network to send and receive information from your computer.  Networks can range from a private network of your home computer, printer, and memory drive to the global network called the Internet. There are two types of IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6.  These addresses consist of binary bits that create a unique address for your computer.  IPv6 addresses were created because of the explosion of personal computer and internet based devices; there was a fear that there wouldn’t be enough IP addresses to go around.

You may be wondering how your computer got an IP address since you didn’t create one.  Well, the answer is that there are two types of IP addresses: static and dynamic.  Dynamic is the most common type of IP address and is assigned by the network hardware (your router).  These dynamic IP addresses are temporary addresses that are automatically renewed by your computer.  Sometimes you will be assigned a new IP address but most of the time you will keep the old one.  There also is a static IP address that can be created by you in your network settings, but this is not recommended since this can cause network issues.
